A Little Bit About Independent Animal Rescue, Inc. (IAR) IAR started with one woman’s big dreams, a bigger heart, and a very distinctive purple pickup truck that helped her rescue countless numbers of unwanted, abused, and homeless Triangle pets. Originally founded in 1994, IAR earned an official 501 (c)(3) status in 1995. IAR is currently governed by a Board of Directors, managed by elected officers, and supported by over 100 unpaid volunteers. There are no paid positions within IAR, so 100% of all donations directly support animal care and rehabilitation.
The mission of Independent Animal Rescue is to rescue and provide safe and responsible care for homeless, abandoned, and abused animals. We shall strive to help all animals in need through our service programs. We will serve our communities through promotion of spay or neuter for all companion animals, and the education of children and adults in the humane care, respect and responsibility for animals on this earth. IAR operates the following animal welfare programs:
Foster Program – IAR rescues animals that are found as strays or originate from the local shelters that are in danger of euthanasia. We place these animals in loving foster homes and pay for all vet care and animal supplies. Once the animals are ready for adoption, we screen potential adopters and create a match so that the animal will be adopted into a loving forever home.
Community Spay/Neuter Program (C-SNP) - IAR identifies disadvantaged individuals in the Triangle unable or unwilling to pay for the costs associated with sterilization of their pets and offers to pay veterinary care and transportation fees.
The Coalition to Unchain Dogs – IAR provides funding for a group of Durham, Orange, and Wake County residents seeking local laws to ban or severely restrict the practice of chaining dogs and to build fences for formerly chained dogs (http://www.unchaindogs.net).
Feral Cat Program - Trap-neuter-release to reduce the overpopulation of feral cats.
Dog Behavioral Training Program - IAR provides funding for behavioral training for dogs in foster care and those newly adopted because we believe this will increase the likelihood of adoption. We partner with local dog behaviorists in the area to provide this service.
